Today, we spent our lesson searching for potential song choices in our chosen genre. To aid our search, we looked specifically at YouTube channels which publicize indie artists and their music videos.
Here are a few channels we combed through...
IndieCurrent displays both known and unknown indie artists without the accompanying music video. This was particularly useful to us, as using less popular artists makes it easier for our audience to appreciate the video we have produced without comparing it to the official video published by the artists themselves. We are also aware of the danger of becoming too engrossed in the existing video, making it harder for us to reflect our own ideas in our final product - this channel has made it easier for us to focus on the lyrics of our choices.
MORindie promotes many unknown indie/ alternative artists of
both genders. The MOR Network blog makes for an interesting read, as it
gives readers information about the artist/ band but also features the
opinions of those who have discovered the songs. The bloggers support
the creative direction of the artists, often describing the type of song
and the feelings or responses they produce for their audience. This is
extremely useful, as it provides us with an insight of how people
respond to certain lyrics and themes in such songs. Perhaps playing
on some of these responses and interpretations will help us to produce a
more engaging and relatable music video.
dynmk is a channel that favours female vocalists. We have decided to use a female star in our video, so this channel helped to refine our search. Again, the existing music videos (if any) are not displayed on the channel itself, so we are unaffected by them. Another theme which runs through the channel is the type of songs that are featured - many are produced by unheard-of artists who use ambient yet futuristic sounds, common to the indie genre, to create downtempo music with a smooth electronic beat. While some may argue that this falls under the 'chillout' or 'deep house' genre, some of these songs also fall under the indie electronic or indie alternative genre.
Finally, Noisey is one of my favourite channels on YouTube as it explores popular culture and how artists influence the world we live in. As well as premiering music videos, Noisey also produces videos for creative artists, some of which, fall under the indie genre. Although we are trying to avoid watching the videos for our potential song choices, gaining inspiration and finding examples of conventions of indie music videos is vital to our genre research. Using this platform is also a great way for us to discover new artists who we could potentially produce our own music video for.
